You can create beautiful pigments from so many fruits, vegetables, and spices.
This year we used:
Turmeric for yellow
Cabbage (using a white egg) for blue
Cabbage (using a brown egg) for green
Blueberries (using a white egg) for light blue
Beets (using a white egg) for dark pink color
Beets (using a brown egg) for maroon
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons of turmeric to two cups water
2 cups shredded cabbage to two cups water
2 cups blueberries to two cups water
2 cups shredded beets to two cups water
2 tablespoons of vinegar for each mixture
Instructions:
*Each color mixture should be boiled separately and placed in different jars.
First, you must hard boil your eggs. Using white and brown eggs will give you different pigments. In a bowl, add your water, spice, fruit or vegetable and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, bring down to simmer for 25 minutes. Strain mixture separating liquid from the solid. Place pigmented mixture in a heat resistant jar, add two tablespoons of vinegar and gently place your eggs in the jar. We let ours sit at room temp for 2 hours.
For darker pigments:
If you want darker pigments, you must take your egg out of the pigmented mixture and let it dry completely before submerging the egg back into the mixture. Repeat this process until you get your desired color.
Happy egg coloring!
